North & South America

As the United States’ neighbor to the North, it is important for lawyers to understand the impact Canada has on the U.S. domestically and internationally. The North American Free Trade Agreement helped make Canada the United States’ largest trading partner. Beyond international trade and business law, the United States’ relationship with Canada touches upon areas of law such as environmental law, human rights law, indigenous rights, civil rights, cyber law, and intellectual property. AUWCL offers a semester exchange program in Ottawa, Canada.

South America contains a rich variety of histories and cultures that provide a unique context for each country's economic and legal system in the region. Given the continent's geographic and biological diversity as well, South America is an important trading partner to many countries of the world for numerous minerals, crops and livestock. The countries of South America have also entered into regional agreements with institutions such as the Andean Community, Mercosur and Unasur. All of these characteristics touch upon numerous areas of law including trade law, indigenous rights, environmental law, human rights law and criminal law. AUWCL provides several opportunities in Colombia, Chile, and Argentina, and is actively forging new relationships with other countries to develop the student’s skills and abilities to participate in South America as an international lawyer.
