Program Description:

CUHKThe AUWCL exchange program with Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) offers students the opportunity to study in an exciting part of the world and at a time of significant legal, social and political change while earning credit toward their J.D. degrees. The Faculty of Law at CUHK was established in 2006 and is located in Hong Kong's central legal and business district. The faculty is known for its high quality teaching and research; many of the school's law professors regularly publish work with top international journals and publishers. Current research at the Faculty of Law focuses on financial regulation and economic development and rights and justice.

Exchange students interested in business law can take classes in a variety of areas including trade, investment, finance, tax and commercial law. The school also offers courses in environmental law, intellectual property law, administrative and regulatory law, and trusts and estates law.

The official language of instruction is English. Chinese language classes are available for an additional fee.

Students participating in this program may choose from a number of classes offered through the CUHK LL.M. program. Classes focusing on Chinese business law, common law, energy and environmental law, and international economic law are available. AUWCL students will be enrolled in regularly scheduled classes with fellow CUHK students.

Students will receive up to 12 credits towards their law degree. Only the credits and not the grades will transfer per ABA requirements. The acceptance of any credit or grade for any courses taken at the CUHK, including externships and other clinical offerings, is subject to determination by the AUWCL Office of the Registrar. For current semester dates, refer to the CUHK visiting students page.

Housing and Cost of Living

Students should visit the CUHK site for cost of living estimates. Most law students find furnished housing independently. If available, students can choose to live in university housing for international students at a subsidized rate. University housing is on the CUHK main campus which is located about 45 minutes to 1 hour from the law campus in downtown Hong Kong. University housing can run from HK$1,200 to HK$2,500 per month (roughly $150 - $350 USD).

The CUHK Office of Student Affairs also provides information for international students looking for off campus housing on their website. The website also provides useful links with additional information about living in Hong Kong and different housing options.
