Program Description:

Internationalize your law qualification by including the international study program in your law degree. This is a unique opportunity to learn about different legal traditions, systems and procedures.

In a globalized world, lawyers are increasingly expected to be able to solve transnational legal problems and to utilize opportunities beyond their home jurisdictions. Law graduates will be asked to function in a modern and increasingly integrated legal world which is structurally different from the professional environment of their predecessors.

The objective of the Monash Law international programs is to tackle these challenges by internationalizing the law curriculum.

These programs offer students the chance to acquire and develop skills and perspectives that they will need as lawyers operating in a modern legal environment.  By providing a multicultural and transnational setting for teaching and learning, the programs give students the unique opportunity to learn about different legal traditions, systems and procedures, allowing them to gain skills and perspectives that will characterize their future years of learning and developing in the legal profession.

This unique summer opportunity is sponsored by Monash University. The program offers international and comparative law subjects taught by distinguished academics and professionals from Australia and worldwide. WCL will select only 5 successful applicants for this program.

Offered in the European spring each year, all units are taught intensively and in English. Classes are taken in the medieval historic centre of Prato, Italy where students can immerse themselves in Italian life.

Students may undertake up to four classes from the offerings. Examples of previously offered classes include:

  • Comparative European legal systems
  • International commercial arbitration
  • Comparative criminal law
  • Trial practice and advocacy

An up-to-date list of courses can be found on the Monash website.

Note: All students are required to attend one compulsory Orientation session to be held at the Prato Centre before starting their classes or as close as possible after arrival.  At these sessions students will receive their computer passwords for electronic resources and the Prato Card (discount card to shops, restaurants etc.).  Attendance will be recorded.

The sessions will be conducted on:

  • Tuesday, 10 April
  • Tuesday, 8 May
  • Wednesday, 23 May
  • Monday, 4 June
The program dates vary depending of the classes students want to take.  Classes start as early as mid May and each session usually runs for three weeks.  There are sessions available until mid July.  For specific dates, please visit the program website.

Housing and living expenses are the sole responsibility of each student. Please also see: Accommodation and Travel.
