Program of Study:
  • Students complete their first two (2) years of legal study at WCL as any other JD student, including their upper level writing requirement, professional skills requirement and any other requirements that may be implemented.   
  • Students then complete two (2) years and a minimum of sixty (60) credits at the University of Ottawa as follows:
    • YEAR 1 at UO - 30 credits1
      Important: for registration purposes, students are considered in year two at uOttawa
      • CML 1110 - Orientation to the Canadian Legal System (1 credit)
      • CML 1103 - Criminal Law and Procedure (5 credits)
      • CML 1104 - Public Law and Legislation (3 credits)
      • CML 1213 - Constitutional Law I (3 credits)
      • CML 2309 - Civil Procedure I (may be completed either in YEAR 3 or YEAR 4) (3 credits)
      • CML 2312 - Administrative Law (may be completed either in YEAR 3 or YEAR 4)  (3 credits)
      • CML 2302 - Business Organizations or CML3102 - Special Course in Business Law (may be completed either in YEAR 3 or YEAR 4)  (3 credits)
      • CML 2320 - Mediation Theory and Practice or CML 2321 – Alternative Dispute Resolution Processes (may be completed either in YEAR 3 or YEAR 4)  (3 credits)
      • Optional CML courses  (6-18 credits, depending on registration in upper-year compulsory courses)
  • YEAR 2 at UO - 30 credits1

    • CML2313 - Constitutional Law II (3 credits)
    • CML 2309 - Civil Procedure I (if not completed in YEAR 3) (3 credits)
    • CML 2312 - Administrative Law (if not completed in YEAR 3) (3 credits)
    • CML 2302 - Business Organizations or CML3102 - Special Course in Business Law (if not completed in YEAR 3) (3 credits)
    • CML 2320 - Mediation Theory and Practice or CML 2321 – Alternative Dispute Resolution Processes (if not completed in YEAR 3) (3 credits)
    • Optional CML courses  (15-27 credits, depending on registration in upper-year compulsory courses)
  1. Students must distribute their courses as follows:
    1. Fall Term: 13-17 credits; January Intensive Term: 3-4 credits; Winter Term: 10-14 credits
  2. By the end of year 4, students must complete one course which satisfies the oral advocacy requirement and one course in which the major paper requirement is fulfilled.
Upon successful completion of both the WCL and UO components, students earn the J.D. degree from WCL and the J.D. degree at the University of Ottawa.
